The Versatile Impact Bag
The impact bag is a versatile and affordable tool, readily available on platforms like eBay or Amazon. It’s a cost-effective investment, ranging from $20 to $40, and can be a game-changer in your golf journey. Here is the Amazon link for the one I purchased, click here. (I do earn a small commission.)
Our first drill focuses on impact, a critical aspect of a powerful and consistent golf swing. The impact bag is an excellent tool for improving your impact position.
Place the impact bag in front of you; it’s often filled with shirts or similar material. If you don’t have one, you can create a makeshift version using a couch and pillows for added safety.
Correcting Early Release
One common issue golfers face is the early release, resulting in a loss of power and poor ball contact. To work on this problem:
- Swing back and allow your wrists to set slightly.
- Focus on turning and squaring the clubface to strike the side of the impact bag.
- Listen for the difference in the sound when you make solid contact with the bag.
This drill will help you develop a more powerful and accurate impact position, preventing early release and its detrimental effects.
In addition to fixing impact issues, the impact bag can be a valuable tool for shaping your golf swing. It allows you to work on various aspects, such as lagging the club and honing your swing path.
If you’re struggling with forward shaft lean, a crucial element for clean ball striking and power, the impact bag can help. Set it up about a foot in front of your ball. If you’re too shallow and miss the bag, it indicates you’re not achieving the desired forward shaft lean.
Incorporate a few other elements into your practice:
- Keep your head from moving forward during the swing.
- Focus on your chest rotating upwards through impact.
These changes in your approach can help you hit the ball with a forward shaft lean, boosting your power and accuracy.
Preventing a Slice
For those dealing with a slice, you can use the impact bag to correct your swing path. Set it up on the inside of your target line, about a foot in front of your ball. If you’re prone to coming over the top, you’ll hit the bag, making it an effective training aid.
Fixing an Overly Shallow Swing
Conversely, if your swing is too shallow and you get stuck, place the impact bag on the outside of your target line, maintaining the same distance from the ball. Missing the bag indicates that your club path may be too shallow, and you’re prone to getting stuck.
Improving Lag
For those eager to improve their lag in the golf swing, the impact bag can be a useful tool. By setting up the bag and trying to hit it with a descending blow, you’ll work on delaying your wrist release. This drill can help you generate more clubhead speed and maximize your power potential.
In the world of golf, small adjustments can lead to significant improvements. The impact bag is an accessible and effective tool for honing various aspects of your swing. Remember, golf isn’t about perfection; it’s about finding what works best for you to hit the ball consistently and efficiently.
As you practice these impact bag drills, don’t forget to enjoy the process and embrace the journey of becoming a better golfer. Here’s to more accurate and powerful shots on the fairway!
